Toyota Excels in J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS)

J.D. Power Awards

As one of the most highly regarded names in the industry, J.D. Power annually conducts a thorough evaluation of vehicle reliability from all brands currently on the market. Known as the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), this extensive research process covers 184 specific problem areas across nine major vehicle categories including climate, driving assistance, driving experience, exterior, features/controls/displays, infotainment, interior, powertrain, and seats. Each brand receives a score that lists its reliability rating in terms of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100).

For 2025, Toyota dominated the VDS with plenty of recognition at both the brand and model-specific levels. As a brand, Toyota ranked fourth highest of 30 total brands measured in the survey. Even more impressive, Toyota took home a total of 6 model-specific reliability awards as well. When it comes to reliability, no other brand does it better than Toyota!

Toyota Ranks High in Consumer Reports Reliability Survey

Consumer Reports Reliability

Another household name when it comes to vehicle evaluation, Consumer Reports takes the time to carefully survey owners of vehicles from all brands in the industry and requests their input on reliability. “While brand rankings can guide you to the showroom, it is critical to also look at reliability for specific models before making a purchase decision,” says Jake Fisher, senior director of auto testing at Consumer Reports. “Even within high-ranking companies, there can be significant variation in reliability.” This thorough evaluation is based on data from more than 300,000 vehicles from the 2000 to 2024 model years.

Of the 22 brands that were evaluated in the survey, it should come as no surprise to hear that Toyota finished near the very top of the list. Toyota ranked third overall and second overall among mass-market brands, a testament to the remarkable quality, dependability, and capability of the Toyota model lineup.
